Shapes in White in Ischgl

After the anniversary edition of the Shapes in White contest last year, ten international artist pairs visit Ischgl again to create something exceptional for 2019: this time, in the shapes of superheroes!

Batman, Superman, Spiderman and other childhood idols reside in Ischgl from January 7 to January 11, 2019. The sculptures will be up to ten metres in height and are going to turn the Silvretta Arena into an impressive open-air gallery for superheroes. At various locations throughout the ski resort, the sculptures will watch over the slopes for five days and five nights – and give winter sports enthusiasts a chance to admire them from all angles! The jury chooses their winner on January 11, 2019, at the big award ceremony.

Watch the sculptors work on their creations! You’ve got a chance to do so at the Silvretta Arena starting January 7. A detailed overview map tells you exactly where to find which sculptures and provides additional info about them. You’ll receive the flyer for the event either online or for free at the tourist office.

26 years of “frosty art” at the Silvretta Arena
The first art project “Shapes in White” took place 26 years ago already. Since then, sculptors from all over the world send their designs to the jury of the Ischgl Snow Sculpture Contest each year. The jury chooses the best ideas and invites ten artist pairs to realise their concepts at the Silvretta Arena in Ischgl. The sculptors have five days to complete their creations made from snow – many of the up to ten metres in height. Let’s hope the artists don’t end up with icicles for fingers …

So, in case you find yourself eye to eye with a giant Batman or Joker – that can only mean one thing: It’s that time of the year again, when the Shapes in White festival is taking over the slopes of Ischgl!

And it gets even better: Thanks to guaranteed snow and constant low temperatures at the Silvretta Arena, the frosty art stays intact until the end of April.

Turn your next ski day into a visit to a gallery and marvel at the “coolest” art in the world!

Our tip: Grab a free overview map for the Shapes in White festival so you have all the info and the locations of the sculptures at a glance!
