Ischgl is celebrating 25 years of art in the snow

International artists will celebrate the 25th snow sculpture competition “Shapes in White” at the Ischgl ski area from January 8 – 12, 2018 in an impressive open air gallery made entirely of snow. The “Best-of” subjects from the last 25 years will be re-interpreted at the anniversary exhibition.

Fire-breathing dragons, blood-thirsty vampires, colorful circus figures or legendary stars at Ischgl – ten international artists will decorate the ski area for the 25th time with their snow creations at the “Shapes in White” snow sculpture competition from January 8 – 12, 2018. This year the imagination and creativity of the artists will know no limits, because the theme of “Best-of: 25 Years of Shapes in White” gives them a free hand in their interpretation of 25 subject areas. At the starting gun on January 8, the selected sculptors will use the Ischgl snow to create their own, personal snow-version of one of the “Best-of” subjects. Over a period of just five days the Silvretta Arena will be converted into an impressive open air gallery with their artistic creations standing up to ten meters tall and placed at more than 2,300 meters above sea level. The artist who most impresses the Ischgl judges will be selected on January 12 at the awards ceremony. Ischgl guests can enjoy the competition right from the beginning by looking over the shoulder to watch the snow artists during their ice-cold efforts, or enjoy the more than life-size sculptures placed on and along the runs while skiing until the end of April. These icy creations will stay solidly frozen until then because of the assured snow conditions in the Silvretta Arena. A map with explanations and locations of the “Shapes in White” is available for free in the ski area.

The idea behind the “Shapes in White”
What to do with all that snow? That was the question facing us in Ischgl 25 years ago when the „Shapes in White“ snow sculpture competition was developed into an artistic project. Since then, sculptors from around the world have been sending their designs to the Ischgl jury. This jury selects the best ideas and invites ten pairs of artists to create them in the Silvretta Arena. And that is how ten master-works made of snow up to ten meters tall are created in only five days throughout the 238 km of ski runs in the ample ski area. And in particular: every year there is a new theme. A great variety of themes have already become an ice-cold reality, with super-life-size sculptures by Dieter Bohlen on the theme of “Casting shows,” the founders of the Silvrettaseilbehn AG on the 50th anniversary of the cable lifts, or a VW-beetle which looks back to the “Volkswagen era.” This year the ski area will be transformed into an impressive open-air gallery with new interpretations of the themes over the last 25 years under the motto “Best-of: 25 years of shapes in white,” which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the legendary Ischgl exposition.
